Despite the renaissance in beer in Poland, both places brewing it and places serving it, the places selling good stuff to drink at home haven’t kept pace. The number of shops selling alcohol has actually gone down significantly over recent years – apparently fewer points of sale is the best way to ensure there are fewer drunks stumbling around, or at least you might think that if you’re a blithering moron like cretins in city hall. It’s bad enough if all you want is crappy macro-lager; if you’re looking for craft beer, especially higher-end stuff, it can be a bit of a nightmare. That’s why a bacon sandwich was very nearly dropped when this place appeared on Facebook with photos of shelves loaded with stunners from the likes of Mikkeller, To Øl, Stones  and Moor beer, especially as it’s only a short stagger from IPIP Towers.

A lightning fast stroll up Jan Pawła revealed a sight even better than Facebook suggested. As well as shelves groaning with imported winners, you also get a dazzling selection of Polish craft beers, as well as some very decent regional beers. There are too many different beers to count the total number on offer, but it’s safe to say that you could get very drunk every day for an entire month and never drink the same beer twice: there must be close to 400 to choose from. And on top of that you also have three taps serving up keg beer to take home in PET bottles and a selection of spirits that could easily keep you drunk for the rest of your life.

After much umming and errring and a quick check of the bank balance, I trotted home with the following: an All Others Pale and a Peter, Pale & Mary, both pale ales by Mikkeller; a By Udder Means, a milk stout by To Øl; a So'Hop and a Revival, both pale ales by the Moor Beer Company; a Rage Machine, a chocolate chilli milk stout by Kraftwerk (and the sole Polish beer); and a bottle of Beer Geek Vanilla Shake, an imperial oatmeal stout by Mikkeller which was by far the best beer I had at last autumn’s Warsaw Beer Festival and one that’s been at the top of my ‘must find’ list ever since. In short I was a happy, happy, happy man. Unfortunately, with the seven bottles costing 141zl, my bank manager was far from happy, but he’s a miserable sod at the best of times, so bollocks to him: I’ve got stunning beer and he hasn’t.
If you’re in the area, you really have to take a wander along to this shop; if you’re not in the area, it’s worth making a special trip. It’s even open 24 hours a day, so any time is a good time. One little criticism is that the fridges only hold lesser beers (and liquids that frankly do not count as beers), but frankly the only real problem here is not maxing out your credit card on each and every visit. Very highly recommended.

Not so long ago, the Wisła banks were best avoided on summer evenings, unless your idea of fun is cans of warm Zywiec and a punch-up. Wola and Bemowo (part one)

It’s easy to forget how far Warsaw has come on its beer journey. From having no multi-tap bars four years ago, there are now more than fifty of the things. They’re even popping up in the suburbs. Inspired by the map function on the utterly excellent  ontap.pl , we booked an Uber to the wilds of Wola with a route plotted out to deepest darkest Bemowo. Yes, it is easy to miss First stop was Beczka Chmielu Pub at Wolska 89. Behind the unassuming single-window shop front that’s all too easy to miss is this smallish place: just seven seats in the front room, along with a small fridge and a short, rather low bar that’s clearly intended for ordering at rather than propping up. But behind that bar are eleven taps, Polish and Lithuanian beers and a cider, all at prices a notch or two lower than city centre bars. Craft Beer Muranow

Open at last! After months of riding past what was once Warsaw’s premier (mostly by virtue of being only) Nigerian restaurant and wondering when, or even if, Craft Beer Muranow was finally going to open, a couple of weeks ago they finally poured their first pint. But has it been worth the wait? So far the signs are very promising indeed. Two floors of drinking space It’s hard to know how the place compares to what used to be here, largely because I’m only very slightly more likely to be seen eating goat curry than I am to be spotted swigging a can of Zywiec while Satan skates to work. Walking in you get a sense of space from the double-height space at the front with a mezzanine floor off to your right.
